A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse on Monday said President Bola Tinubu has refused to sack Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos state because he did him a favour in the February 25 2023 presidential election.
INEC declared Tinubu, candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the election ahead of Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).
The Supreme Court on October 26 dismissed the appeals of Atiku and Obi and affirmed Tinubu’s victory.
Speaking on Channels Television’s programme ‘Sunrise Daily’, Pearse, who is a member, 2023 PDP national presidential campaign council, Lagos state said just like he fired the heads of EFCC, CBN and other heads of agencies, Tinubu should have fired the INEC chairman for failing to deliver on what he promised Nigerians during the election.
He said “Imagine in 2027 and the current INEC chairman that bungled the last election is still the chairman. If he is not the INEC chairman, then he should have been fired immediately after this election. If the president is keeping him, it is because he has done him a favour. We have a problem there”.
“I said the INEC chairman should have been fired because all the promises he made about electronic transmission of results, nothing was achieved”.
Also speaking on the ruling of the Supreme Court he court which held that the outcome of the 2023 presidential election was unaffected by INEC’s failure to post the election results on the INEC Result Viewing Portal in real time, Pearse said “The judgment of the Supreme Court had nothing to do with the performance of INEC. The Supreme Court had no way of making INEC do its job”.
“INEC can never be ready for any election. We must totally dismantle INEC. INEC is a dysfunctional system”.
