Despite the decision of the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone the position of Senate Presidency to the South-South, more groups in the party are rooting for Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, former Zamfara state governor who is from the North-West.

On Friday, two groups within the party that worked for the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the President-elect, said Yari is the most qualified for the exalted position given his background, experience and contribution to the success of the APC since its formation in 2013.

The two groups Northern Alliance for Tinubu (NAT) and Arewa Mandate Forum for Asiwaju (AMFA) said the North-west provided the highest percentage of votes of over 30% for APC in the presidential election, above every other geopolitical zone in the country.

In a joint statement signed by Yau Abubakar, the groups said while the likes of Godswill Akpabio joined the APC after it became the ruling party at the centre, Yari took a huge risk and was one of the foundation governors who birthed the APC and contributed to its success in winning the presidential elections in 2015, 2019 and 2023.

” We implore the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to ignore the decision of the Abdullahi Adamu-led APC NWC in zoning the position to the South-South just as he moved against them when they announced Ahmad Lawan as their anointed presidential candidate last year. These people don’t mean well for the party”.

“We are confident that Senator-elect Abdul’aziz Yari has all it takes to occupy the number one position in the 10th Senate. Asiwaju needs the full support of the National Assembly to succeed and Yari will provide that support” they said.
